    National Speech & Debate Tournament

    The flagship US speech and debate championship. ~6,000 qualifiers across 13 events.

    Eligibility

    • NSDA member with sufficient activity points
    • Grades 9–12
    • Qualify through district tournament in your assigned NSDA district
    • Different events have different prep and qualification thresholds

    Annual Timeline

    1. Aug–Feb

      Compete in regular-season local and national circuit tournaments

    2. Mar–Apr

      District qualifier tournaments — top 2–4 per event advance

    3. May

      Final prep, case rewrites, practice rounds

    4. Mid-June

      NSDA Nationals — typically 5–7 days, rotating US city

    Preparation Strategy

    1

    Pick your event early and specialize

    Lincoln-Douglas, Policy, Public Forum, Congress, World Schools, and individual speech events all reward different skill sets. Most top competitors specialize by 10th grade.

    Build your evidence file year-round

    Top debaters maintain organized evidence databases (Verbatim, Word) across topics. Quality of cuts matters more than volume.

    Get coaching beyond your school

    Camps (NSD, DDI, TDC, etc.) and private coaches are common at the top circuit level. Plan summer training in 9th–10th grade.

    4

    Aim for TOC bids in parallel

    The Tournament of Champions runs alongside NSDA. Bid-acquired TOC qualification is often more competitively respected than NSDA placement.

    Common Pitfalls

    • Spreading across too many events — specialization wins at nationals.
    • Underestimating speech events compared to debate (they have lower thresholds for finals).
    • Skipping circuit tournaments — judges expect circuit-honed cases at NSDA.
