    National Economics Challenge

    The flagship US HS economics team competition. Tests micro, macro, international, and current events.

    Eligibility

    • Teams of 3–4 students in Grades 9–12
    • Two divisions: David Ricardo (AP Econ students) and Adam Smith (general)
    • Teacher coach required
    • Qualify through state competition to reach nationals

    Annual Timeline

    1. Fall

      Form team; complete AP Macro/Micro coursework or independent study

    2. Feb–Mar

      Online qualifier and state competition

    3. April

      Regional/national semifinals

    4. May

      National finals in New York City — championship round

    Preparation Strategy

    1

    Master both AP curricula

    AP Macro + AP Micro cover ~80% of competition content. Use the official CEE study guide and Khan Academy AP Econ for foundations.

    Drill past quiz bowls

    Final rounds use rapid-fire quiz format. Speed and accuracy under pressure is trained, not innate — schedule weekly mock buzzer rounds.

    Stay current on monetary policy

    Current-events questions cover Fed decisions, global trade developments, and major macro indicators from the past 12 months.

    Specialize within your team

    Assign domain leads (micro, macro, international, current events). Quiz bowl rounds reward depth in specific areas.

    Common Pitfalls

    • Underestimating the international economics section.
    • Treating current events as optional — they're heavily weighted at nationals.
    • Weak buzzer reflexes — practice format-specific drills.
