    Federal Reserve High School Essay Competition

    Federal Reserve System's flagship economics writing competition for high school students.

    Eligibility

    • Grades 9–12 (varies slightly by Reserve Bank district)
    • Resident of a participating Federal Reserve district
    • Solo submissions only
    • Essay must address the assigned annual prompt within word limit

    Annual Timeline

    1. Sep–Oct

      Annual prompt released by participating Reserve Banks

    2. Nov–Feb

      Research, draft, and revise essay

    3. Feb–Mar

      Submission deadlines (varies by district)

    4. Apr–May

      Winners announced; cash prizes and Fed recognition

    Preparation Strategy

    Read the Fed's own research first

    Use FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data) and recent Fed speeches/working papers as primary sources. Demonstrating Fed-literate reasoning is a major differentiator.

    Anchor in data, not opinion

    Winning essays cite specific monetary policy decisions, GDP/inflation data, and academic research. Avoid generic policy commentary.

    Write tightly to the prompt

    Word limits are strict. Re-read the prompt after each draft and cut anything that doesn't directly serve it.

    • Treating the prompt as opinion writing rather than economic analysis.
    • Citing only news articles instead of Fed sources or academic papers.
